SSHS junior varsity defeat MHS in girls caging, 21-12,

The Saipan Southern High School Lady Manta Rays junior varsity squad started its Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization basketball season with a 21-12 victory over the Marianas High School Lady Dolphins last Thursday at the MHS Gym.

The Lady Rays held MHS scoreless in the opening 10 minutes and built an early 8-0 lead.

Both teams came out with only a basket in the second quarter as the count shifted to 10-2 at halftime.

Czarina Lizama led SSHS with six points in the first half.

The Lady Rays kept their defensive game plan after the break and shut out the Dolphins again in the third quarter.

SSHS’ Merlene Rekesiwang delivered four points in the third quarter to give her team a promising 14-2 advantage, heading into the final period.

MHS nailed a couple of treys in a late rally attempt, but could not climb out of the hole.

SSHS’ Lizama and Vanessa Bartolo led all scorers with six points apiece, while MHS’ Marlene Lumabi turned in a handful in the loss.

The season continues on Thursday with SSHS taking on Kagman High School. The junior varsity game is set for 4:30pm, followed by the varsity pairing at 5:30pm.

SSHS 21
 – Bartolo 6, Lizama 6, Rekesiwang 4, Franciso 3, Lloren 2.

MHS 12 – Lumabi 5, Farro 4, Echavez 3.

Scoring by quarters: 8-0, 10-2, 14-2, 21-12.
