Saipan Southern High School's Marrielle Gariguez dribbles the ball into scoring territory during their MISO girls soccer match against the Marianas High School junior varsity squad Tuesday at the Oleai Sports Complex Field. (Walter Sutherland)  A hat trick by Saipan Southern High School’s Marrielle Gariguez led the Lady Manta Rays to a 4-0 victory over the Marianas High School junior squad (MHS2) as the Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization girls soccer season continued last Tuesday at the Oleai Sports Complex Field.

The win improved the SSHS Lady Manta Rays win-loss-draw record to 1-0-1, while winless MHS2 absorbed its third loss.

SSHS drew first blood in the first 20 seconds of the game. The Lady Manta Rays rebounded the ensuing kickoff and cleared it up to star forward Gariguez who was posted up on the outside.

From there Gariguez worked the ball up field and booted a strike from about 18 yards away from the goal.

MHS2 tightened up its defense after the early goal until the last five minutes of the first half when Gariguez broke free again and netted a pair of solo goals in the 25th and 28th minutes of the frame.

Gariguez patiently conserved her energy for the late push and eventually weaved her way through traffic for a pair of impressive goals.

SSHS was not finished after that and managed another goal off a free kick due to a handball in the opening minute of the second half.

SSHS’ Mikky Vargas powered home the insurance goal from just shy of midfield.

The ball took a looping bounce that deflected off the goalie and into the net. As the ball made its way toward the net, Gariguez was streaking through the goalie box to make a play on the ball. Gariguez’s mere presence may have distracted the goalkeeper from stopping Vargas’ incoming shot on goal.

MHS2 never managed an answer in the match, however the young developing group did a good job containing SSHS’ attacks for the remainder of the contest.

The season continues today at 4:30pm with top-ranked MHS1 Lady Dolphins (2-0-0) hosting Kagman High School Lady Ayuyus (1-0-1) at the Oleai field.
