Saipan Southern High School's Mikky Vargas breaks loose up the middle in Tuesday's MISO girls soccer match against Marianas High School's Junior Lady Dolphins on the Oleai Sports Complex Field. (Walter Sutherland)  The Saipan Southern High School Lady Manta Rays roasted Marianas High School’s Junior Dolphins (MHS2), 4-0, in Tuesday’s Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization girls soccer matchup at the Oleai Sports Complex Field.

The win lifted the Lady Rays’ win-loss-draw record to 3-1-2, locking them into second place in the standings. Winless MHS2, meanwhile, absorbed its sixth straight loss.

SSHS’ Marielle Gariguez’s second hat trick of the season highlighted the contest.

She netted a swift goal just about five minutes after the kickoff via a free kick by means of a handball by the Lady Dolphins.

MHS2’s defense did a good job holding off the star forward after the early score, but Gariguez remained patient and twice found the back of the net late in the opening fame during the 25th and 33rd minutes of the 35-minute half.

Guariguez tended to the goal after the pause, but her teammate Mikky Vargas penetrated through a mob of MHS2 defenders for another quick hit in the 5th minute of the second to half put some icing on the cake.

The last game of the regular season kicks off today at 4:30pm with the top-ranked MHS varsity squad (4-0-1) being hosted by the Kagman High School Lady Ayuyus (2-2-1).

In addition, the single-elimination playoffs will then take place on Friday starting at 2pm with MHS1 taking on MHS2 at 2pm followed by SHS against KHS at roughly 3:15pm.

Then the third place consolation match is set for 9am on Saturday morning immediately followed by MISO’s championship match; contrary to previous reports, Tinian High School will not be joining in on the action this season.
