Dr. Laura M. Torres Souder and Dr. Samuel Betances will be speaking on the islands of Saipan, Tinian, and Rota on the issue of the “island-global divide.”

The lectures will ask how Chamorro and Carolinian cultures can be maintained while the CNMI prepares to be players in the global economy.

The speakers will also ask how the CNMI can maintain its culture while providing its children with the skills they need to adapt in the 21st century.

Souder is a Chamorro historian and advocate for indigenous and women’s rights. Betances has taught in Guam and the CNMI about maintaining language and culture.

On Saipan, they will speak at the American Memorial Park today at 6:30pm. On Dec. 11, they will speak at 9:30am with PSS Central Office staff at the Board of Education conference room. Later that day at 3pm they will speak to teachers and school principals.

On Dec. 12, they will be on Tinian to speak at the high school at 9am. On Dec. 13, they will speak at the Tinian Public Library at 1:30pm.

On Rota, they will speak at the Rita Hocog Inos Jr. Sr. High School at 1pm on Dec. 15. They will speak later at 5pm that same day at the Rota’s Mayor Office.

The Northern Marianas Humanities Council sponsors the events.
