SPC marks 67th anniversary
NOUMEA, New Caledonia—The Secretariat of the Pacific Community celebrated its 67th anniversary yesterday, Feb. 6, as an international organization dedicated to the Pacific region.
Founded in 1947 under the Canberra Agreement, SPC is an organization that has grown and evolved over time and is now recognized worldwide as a specialist in its specific work areas, which include public health, geoscience, agriculture, forestry, water resources, disaster management, fisheries, statistics, transport, energy, human rights, gender, youth and culture.
Now with more than 600 staff located at SPC headquarters in Noumea, New Caledonia; the regional office in Suva, Fiji; a country office in Honiara, Solomon Islands; and the North Pacific office in Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia.
SPC is embarking on a new term in its operations with a more cross-sectoral- and program-based approach to the Pacific’s specific characteristics with a view to providing comprehensive and consistent responses to its member countries and territories’ development issues built on the expert knowledge of its seven technical divisions.
A fresh senior management team composed of two new deputy directors general, i.e., Cameron Diver (Operations and Management), and Fabian McKinnon (Programmes), along with a new Director General, Dr. Colin Tukuitonga, will be addressing SPC’s upcoming challenges, which include mainstreaming Pacific-related issues into the post-2015 development agenda.
