Sons of Saipan contributes to relief efforts
Sons of Saipan, a group of Saipan-born residents living in Guam, has joined relief efforts to help Typhoon Souledor victims on Saipan.
Pacific Century Fellows Class of 2015 member Ed Arriola noted that the donations from SOS has come in and is only waiting to be distributed.
Arriola hopes that the donations will be turned over to United 4 Saipan today, Aug. 21.
U4S is a grassroots group of community members reaching out to those direly in need of relief and assistance after Souledor hit Saipan last Aug. 2.
Over the course of nearly three weeks, SOS has been reaching out to the community and businesses in Guam to donate relief goods to Saipan.
As of last week, they were able to fill a container truck and raise $10,000.
SOS also created a GoFundMe account to further raise funds.
Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang said the people of Saipan are grateful for all the donations they’re getting from off-island.
“We won’t forget this, because in a time of need of their own, we too must give back and support. We are very grateful for the many efforts of these good people that are donating in our time of need,” he said.
Apatang also noted that Itoda School from Japan, whose students visited the CNMI twice under the homestay program, has donated 30,000 yen or $241.
Saipan Mayor’s Office executive assistant Yuki Kishimoto said that all kinds of donations are welcome from any off-island donors.
“I am grateful that Itoda donated because any donations especially from Itoda is welcome and we appreciate their efforts,” Apatang said.
