The Sonics dominated Kanaka Blue, 36-21, during the third game in the U15 division of the Inaugural Frank M. Diaz Memorial Youth League last Saturday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
The Sonics leaned on their much deeper bench to cruise to victory. The Jesse Tudela-coached Sonics had a complete roster for last Saturday’s match and majority of them have played before in several youth leagues on Saipan, while Kanaka has a lot of inexperienced players.
With enough manpower, the Sonics built a 24-11 lead at halftime and never looked back to hand Kanaka its fourth loss in as many matches.
Rafael Ordona paced the Sonics with his 11 points, while five of his teammates contributed at least 4 points apiece.
Meanwhile, T8 Warriors and Wong prevailed in the two other matches last weekend.
The Warriors played in the first game and whipped Kanaka Gray, 50-20, while in the second game, Wong routed the Ol’Aces, 40-27.
Rickson Mungwughi led Wong’s victory, firing 13 points. He put the finishing touches in Wong’s win after drilling the team’s last 7 markers. E.J. Abeja chipped in 8, while Christopher Austin added 7. Five other Wong players made it to the board to help the team’s cause.
Wong took a 21-13 edge at the break and never relinquished the driver’s seat in the second half despite the efforts of the Ol’Aces’ Troy Ngirarois. Ngirarois top-scored for the Ol’Aces with his 11 points.
In the T8-Warriors-Kanaka Gray tiff, the former were just too good for a young team like the latter.
The Warriors simply had too many offensive options to crush the hapless Kanaka Gray, whose players are still developing their basic skills and are just starting to learn how to play as team.
Nine Warriors players graced the team’s box score, while only four hit the board for Kanaka Gray. Jeffrey Omar had 12 points to lead the Warriors, who drew 9 and 8 markers from Ace Evangelista and Norita Ping, respectively. Trevor Quitugua and Teison Sulap added 6 apiece for the Warriors, while only Nunu Rastang drained more than two baskets for Kanaka Gray for his 6 points. Kenneth Kaipat and Anthony Lisua had 5 markers each for Kanaka Gray, while Jun Blas contributed 3.
