A total of 18 members of the Saipan Marianas Lions Club and 12 members of the Saipan Marianas Alpha Leo Club came together last Nov. 22 at the Garapan Fishing Base for the SMLC monthly cleanup.

The two clubs also participated in the Saipan Fil-American Lions Club’s 4th Annual Tree Planting, putting to the ground a total of eight seedlings—four flame trees, and four camachile trees—that were planted around Garapan Fishing Base. The camachile trees were planted closer to the shore to reduce beach erosion and the flame trees were placed in different locations around Garapan Fishing Base. The seedlings were provided by the Marianas Island Nature Alliance.

Ladyvir Canape, who is president of the Saipan Marianas Lions Club, underscored the importance of planting trees, saying, “Plant a tree and save our Earth.” She also pointed out that trees remove carbon dioxide from the air, reduce erosion, prevent flooding, add oxygen, provide medicine, provide fruits, and cool down homes.

The Saipan Fil-American Lions Club recently extended financial assistance to the victims of Super Typhoon Ulysses in the Philippines, which flooded many parts of the northern Philippines. With the assistance of the members’ relatives in the Philippines, they were able to assist three families in Naga City, which are the family of Rea Alano Manondo, Effigine Deblois Crisostomo, and Leamor R. Manlangit, who were given $210 each.

“They are in dire need of assistance. We needed to act soon, that is why we asked members to share any amount,” said club president Eden Mercado.

The club was also able to collaborate with the Tribes and Nations Outreach Mission Academy in Laguna, the Philippines, where they delivered care packages to San Vicente; Milaor, Camarines Sur; Kawa-kawa, Ligao, Tabaco, and Legaspi City in Albay.

Club secretary Mario Mayuga stated that they are grateful to their members for their generosity. He applauded Mildred Pabilando and Anna Mercado for their assistance in coordinating the assistance in the Philippines through their relatives and non-profit organizations.

If you are interested in joining the club or want to collaborate in donating to the needy, you can contact club president Eden Mercado at 788-2416 or Mayuga at 285-1021. To learn more about Lions Clubs, visit www.lionsclubs.org
