Small craft and high surf advisories still up

Share

Acting governor Francisco M. Borja has extended the small craft and high surf advisories in the CNMI to 6am this morning due to the large trade wind swell that maintained hazardous surf along east-facing reefs last night.

According to information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center, east winds of 15 to 20 knots with gusts to around 25 knots and seas of 8 to 10 feet will produce hazardous conditions for operators of small craft. The highest seas are expected east of the CNMI.

It added that the public should expect hazardous surf of 10 to 12 feet along east facing reefs tonight. Surf is expected to fall below hazardous levels early Thursday morning.

Borja is thus advising the general public and inexperience mariners—especially those operating smaller vessels—to avoid navigating in these conditions and take extra precautionary measures on entering and leaving harbor and inlets. Avoid venturing into the water along exposed reefs and beaches especially those facing East exposures as rip currents will be life threatening.
