Small craft advisory in effect until 3pm today

A small craft advisory for hazardous seas is in effect until 3pm today, Monday. Waves are expected to be hazardous to small craft, based on information received from the National Weather Service in Guam and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center.

Seas of 8 to 11 feet are expected until this afternoon. Seas will then diminish to between 7 and 9 feet tonight. Seas will still remain elevated after that, then may challenge small craft advisory criteria again next weekend.

Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, are being advised to avoid shoaling areas where long period swell can sharpen into large breaking waves. It is not unusual for waves to break much farther from shoaling areas than is normally experienced. Remember, breaking waves can easily capsize even larger vessels. (EOC)
