Saipan International School's Amber Roberts fires a spike in Thursday's MISO girls volleyball game against Grace Christian Academy held at the Marians High School Gymnasium. (Walter Cepeda Sutherland) The varsity squads of Saipan International School and Marianas High School are the frontrunners in the Marianas Interscholastic  Sports Organization girls volleyball standings after the conclusion of Thursday’s matches held at the MHS Gymnasium.

With two wins apiece, the SIS Lady Geckos and MHS1 Lady Dolphins are the only undefeated squads left in the six-team field.

In other results, the Kagman High School Lady Ayuyus (1-1) snuck past MHS2 (0-2), while Marianas Baptist Academy (1-1) was awarded a forfeit victory over an absent Saipan Southern High School (0-2) crew.

SIS1 issued Grace Christian Academy (1-1) its first loss on Thursday with a hard-fought sweep, 25-10, 25-23, and 15-8, while MHS1 bested SIS2 in three sets, 25-13, 25-18, and 15-7.

GCA finished third place last year and gave the defending champion Lady Geckos a good run for their money in the second set. SIS1 dominated the field last year, and although they have a number of returning seniors, their competition overall looks to be much improved.

As for MHS1, the Lady Dolphins drew a lighter matchup and took on SIS’ younger up-and-coming prospects, but still sent a message to the remaining contenders.

Meanwhile, KHS grinded out a nice comeback over MHS2. KHS eked out the opening set, 25-23, but MHS2 answered in the second set, 25-19, to force the match into a tiebreaker. MHS2 held a 14-11 game-point advantage, but KHS roared back at crunch time and stole the game, 18-16, in a bonus play.

By rule, game point of the third face off is set at 15 with the cap limit removed, and a team has to win by two points. Game point for the two opening sets is placed at 25 with a cap limit of 30.

The season continues on Tuesday at the MHS Gym at 4pm with MBA hosting GCA on the north court and KHS facing MHS1 at the south side. Then at 5pm SSHS calls over SIS2 on the north square with SIS1 against MHS2 on the south court.
