SIS students win top honors at Math Court

(Contributed Photo) Saipan International School high school and middle school students reaped several top awards during the Math Court Competition held on Oct. 8, 2011, at Hopwood Junior High School.

“This competition means a lot to our students. Once students get ribbons for their events, they become eligible to compete in the regional competition,” said Marifi Ayeras, the team’s math coach. “The SIS community fully supports the promotion and advancement of our math program, and especially supports these students. The Math Court team really appreciates that.”

Hyun Ji Kim secured second place overall for the 6th Grade category while Cerinn Hwang got third place overall in the 7th Grade category.

In the high school categories, Sae Ri Oh led the team by garnering first place in both Algebra and Advanced Algebra. Other top Algebra competitors were Ye Jun Choi (first place), Sei Higuchi (second place), Jin Han Yoon (third place), Jong Seo Koo (fourth place), and Hye Ryeong Chun (fourth place).

Students who won ribbons in the Geometry category were Jong Seo Koo (third place), Hye Ryeong Chun (third place) and Jin Han Yoon (third place). In the Advanced Algebra category, ribbons were won by Yumi Ito (first place), Jin Han Yoon (first place), Dong Hyun Kim (first place), Sei Higuchi (first place), Min Suk Kim (first place), Jeane Bracken (second place), Soo Ho Sohn (third place), and Jong Seo Koo (fifth place).

The CNMI Math Court Competition is a series of meets that measures the mathematical achievement of students at every grade level and awards those students showing the highest levels of mastery at each level.

Over 500 students in the CNMI public and private schools competed in the October competition. The next competition will be held on Nov. 19.
