Saipan International School is on a roll, while Grace Christian Academy 2 is back on track in the middle school division of the 2018-2019 Commonwealth Coalition of Private Schools Association Volleyball League.

The Geckos, who dropped their opener against Agape Christian School 1, made in three wins in a row following a sweep of Agape 2 last Thursday at the SIS court in As Lito. The Mili Saiki-coached SIS eased past Agape 2 in the first set, 25-9, and although the Torchbearers played better in the second, the Geckos still won by double digits, 25-12, to notch the outright victory.

With SIS extending its streak, it forced a three-way tie for second place in the team standings (pending results of yesterday’s games). The Geckos were in a standoff with Agape 1 and Mt. Carmel School, as they have similar 3-1 records. SIS was hoping to get the solo No. 2 spot yesterday, as it was scheduled to play against Seventh Day Adventist (1-3).

Meanwhile, GCA 2 recorded only its second win after downing Saipan Community School in straight sets. GCA, which won its opener over Mt. Carmel, but loss back-to-back games (versus GCA 1 and SIS), eked out a 26-24 victory against SCS in the first set. Then in the second, the Eagles gained more cushion en route to a 25-13 triumph.

With its 2-2 slate, GCA 2 moved up to third place in the team standings, while SCS dropped to a 0-4 mark and was at the bottom of the rankings, sharing the cellar with Agape 2. Both SCS and Agape 2 had a chance to finally break into the win column as they were scheduled to meet in one of the pair of matches in the league yesterday.

Today, the competition will be back to a four-game schedule with the leading and unbeaten GCA 1 (4-0) putting its clean slate on the line when it takes on Agape 1 at the Torchbearers turf in Middle Road. SIS and Mt. Carmel will also have their streaks at stake as they collide in the 3:30pm game at the Geckos court. The two other matches this afternoon will have SDA battling SCS at the former’s court in Chalan Kiya, while Agape 2 will host GCA 2.
