For the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Saipan International School’s high school AP Seminar students in the AP Capstone Class presented their research project on the topic of sustainability last Wednesday night at the American Memorial Park Theater.

The projects presented by each group are related to various issues of sustainability and proposed solutions based on their research.

AP Seminar allows students to develop and practice their skills in research, collaboration, and communication. Students investigate topics in a variety of subject areas, write research-based essays, and design and give presentations both individually and as part of a team.

“Preserving Aquatic Life in Lakes” was presented by Charlene Son, Ian Song, Cathy Woo, and Wendy Son.

“Asteroid Mining” was presented by Stephanie Kim, Claire Park, Yebin Shin, Lisha Lai, and Olivia Hwang.

“Mitigating Coral Bleaching in the Great Barrier Reef” was presented by Omari Joab, Hestina Yelin Park, Christian Newman, Soledad Sablan, and Elizabeth Tom.

“Mitigating Carbon in Air Pollution in China” was presented by Jacky Zhen, Charlie Li, and Mark Cao.

“The Poaching of African Elephants” was presented by Kyle Kramer, Mimi Culp, MJ Magno, and Serin Chung.

Lisha Lai told Saipan Tribune after the presentation that their group chose their topic because they wanted to see what other resources are available in space to help sustain Earth. She said the process and length of research for the project was long and nerve-wracking, but that  “through group discussions and our teachers’ support, this project turned out to be okay.”

According to SIS headmaster Dr. Ron Snyder, SIS is the only full Advanced Placement Capstone Diploma school in the CNMI and in Micronesia. “Our AP Seminar students have achieved a 100% pass rate since the program’s inception in 2019. Graduates who come back to SIS to visit say the classes in the Capstone program are the classes that best prepared them for the rigors of university education.”

Synder said that prior to the presentation, each student had to do an individual report on a specific scope to research on, then they come together as a group then combine their information into a presentation.
