Saipan International School 2013 alumnus Abel Pellegrino said he feels the gift of music should be shared. The 18-year-old student currently studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and plans to major in Audio Engineering.

He told Saipan Tribune in an email that his father, the late businessman Anthony Pellegrino, “instilled a drive that will always stay with me.

“He has inspired me to pursue what I love doing. I will follow in his footsteps in the sense that I will do what I love to do,” he said.
Pellegrino’s ultimate goal after completing his studies is to make, produce, write, and perform music. “It’s what I think I’m best at and I love doing it. I would want to do it for the rest of my life.”

He plays the guitar, sings, and draws his musical inspiration from artists like Billy Joel and Frank Ocean.
His passion for music began when has was 12-years-old and picked up a guitar. While residing on Saipan, Pellegrino’s covers of famous songs and music could be heard every week at the Garapan Street Market. The Saipan native also used to put on shows for tourists for two years on the Sunset Cruise to Mañagaha Island on the weekends.

“I feel like the gift of music needs to be shared,” he said.

Pellegrino also plans to enroll in a few classes at Hawaii Community College, where he can produce his own sounds at some of the best production studios on the island.

The former Saipan resident said he hopes to return to Saipan one day to visit. “I want to graduate and move to California or maybe just stay in Hawaii. I feel like there are even more opportunities in the mainland.”

At the end of the day, he urges Saipan youth to “do what makes you happy.

“Bottom of the line, be passionate in what you choose to do. You are your own leader in the end, and people will be interested in anyone with a great attitude. I choose to play music because I have a love for it that never ceases to stop changing. Music personifies a person, fabricates a mood, and adds emotional theme to life in general. It spins an ineffable amount of joy to write and perform, anywhere. It’s taught me how to be me.”
