The 19th Annual Tom Picarro Memorial Fun Run is set for June 16 and this year a team competition has been added in conjunction with the Hand In Hand For Haiti Marathon.

Longtime event organizer Wolf Mojica said the event, which is nicknamed Silver Streak, is supporting Hand In Hand For Haiti Marathon and teams participating in this year’s race will be tasked with getting friends and family members to pledge money toward the Hand In Hand for Haiti Charity.

More details about the charity can be read on the website www.handinhandforhaiti.com.

Teams of six persons will run the 4.3 miles to equal a marathon. Team members will pay the $10 registration fee as well as $300.

Registration for the Silver Streak begins at 5am and the run begins at 6am. Registration fee for those not running the team event is laso $10. The fee includes an event T-shirt for the first 150 finishers as well as drinks and ditty bags.

The run starts at the DFS Galleria main entrance on Beach Road. The turnaround will be across from Char’s in Chalan Laulau.

Mojica said medals will be awarded to the top finishers of 13 age groups.

The Silver Streak is named after and held in honor of Thomas Picarro, the former president of the Saipan division of Duty Free Shoppers.

Picarro was remembered as an avid runner with a head of white/silver hair and this race commemorates his running up and down Beach Road back when he lived on Saipan. Well known as an upstanding member of the community, Mojica said Picarro was always concerned with the welfare of the people.

Last year, Ketson “Jack” Kabiriel completed the 4.2-mile race in 27 minutes and one second for the fastest time among 94 runners. Mamiko Oshima-Berger, meanwhile, won the women’s division with her time of 27:21, which was also the second best time overall.
