Shirley’s, Fiesta win opening games

Shirley’s Coffee Shop and Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan drew first blood in the 2020 TanHoldings Inter-Company Basketball League that kicked off last Friday at the TSL Sports Complex.
Shirley’s downed D&Q in the curtain-raiser, 54-47, while Fiesta Resort defeated Saipan Tribune in the second match, 61-50.
John Jugos stepped up in Shirley’s opener after scoring 26 points, while Junar Guiab also finished in twin digits adding 16.
Jugos delivered 11 of Shirley’s first 13 points in the second half to help the team battle back from a 21-23 deficit in the first half. Guiab also scored majority of his points in the second half, making 10, including three free throws that secured the victory for Shirley’s.
In the other match in the opening week, Fiesta Resort led from start to finish en route to the 11-point winning margin.
Team captain Elmer Esdrelon paced Fiesta with his 13 points, while new recruit Marlon De Dios contributed 12. Arjay Nonato, Fradel Sedillo, and Ronnie Labadan combined for 23 markers for Fiesta Resort’s balance scoring.
Sedillo registered all his 8 points in the first half, handing Fiesta Resort an early double-digit spread, 23-12. Five other Fiesta Resort players hit the board in the first half.
Esdrelon, who was held to a free throw in the first half, redeemed himself in the second, knocking in two triples and three more field goals to give Fiesta Resort a good start.
Young guns Merrick Toves and Matthew Ong had 14 points each on a losing effort for Saipan Tribune.
