Shirley’s edges Alamo/Armatech, takes lead

Shirley’s Badminton Club took the lead in the 9th Annual Traders Insurance Badminton Team Tournament after downing Alamo/Armatech-sponsored United Badminton Club, 25-20, over the weekend at the TSL Sports Complex.
The closely fought match was decided by the games on Court 3 with Shirley’s pulling off a 13-8 victory in the seven events. On Court 1, which featured eight events, Shirley’s and UBC were in a standoff, 12-12. Shirley’s prevailed in the men’s BC, mixed AB, women’s AA, and women’s CC doubles, while UBC won the women’s BB, mixed AA, and mixed BC doubles matches on Court 3.
On Court 1, Shirley’s triumphed in three of the first four events, ruling the women’s BC, mixed BB, and men’s BB doubles, while UBC topped the men’s AA doubles. UBC added the men’s AB and women’s AB doubles to its credit, while Shirley’s earned victories in the mixed CC and men’s CC doubles.
Ferdie Arago and Windy Fernandez handed Shirley’s a 21-14, 19-21, 21-15 win in the mixed AB doubles, while Lani Bartolome and Hannah Choi needed only two games to beat Marlene Peraja and Malou Malasarte in the women’s AA doubles, 21-16, 21-12.
In the mixed CC doubles, Shirley’s’ Alan Relativo and Cassie Obaldo went the distance against UBC’s Jerome Malasarte and Miles Rodriguez before pulling off a 12-21, 22-20, 22-20 win. In the men’s AB doubles, UBC this time won with Glen Bluutjens and Nate Guerrero easing past Chris Hilario and Daniel Macario, 21-10, 21-10. UBC also triumphed in the women’s AB doubles with the mother-and-daughter pair of Malou and Nicole Malasarte outlasting Fernandez and Bartolome, 21-19, 19-21, 21-19.
In the men’s C doubles, Shirley’s and Erwin Lee outclassed UBC’s Peter Han and Jerome Malasarte, 21-12, 21-12, while Baby Banadera and Obaldo needed only two games, too to top Patricia Abantao and Ella Soriano, 21-19, 24-22.
Shirley’s also took the men’s BC doubles after relation and Oh Im Bog swept Guerrero and Don Castillo, 21-13, 21-12, while UBC got the victory in the mixed BC doubles as Rodriguez and Mhar Dela Cruz outclassed Patrick Fernandez and Banadera, 21-12, 19-21, 21-15. The women’s BC doubles also went to three games with Shirley’s Vilma Reyes and Banadera winning over Rodriguez and Soriano, 18-21, 21-11, 21-16.
In the men’s AA doubles, Bluutjens and Guerrero teamed up anew and defeated Macoi Aguda and Macario, 21-19, 21-15, while UBC topped the mixed AA doubles with Andreau Galvez Malasarte sweeping Arago and Choi, 21-19, 21-13.
The three remaining events were decided after three games. Hilario and Jeff Riman edged Dela Cruz and Patrick Fieldad in the men’s BB doubles, 21-11, 14-21, 21-17; Windy Fernandez and Oh Im Bog nipped Nicole Malasarte and Guerrero in the mixed AB, 21-23, 21-14, 21-17; and Nicole Malasarte and Lucelle Lampera downed Jaja Bocago and Windy Fernandez, 17-21, 21-17, 21-15.
