Shirley’s Badminton Club and Community Badminton Club are in a tight race for the second finals berth heading into tonight’s final play date in the 8th Traders Insurance Badminton Team Tournament.

Defending three-time champion Saipan Badminton Club is already assured of the first finals slot after collecting a whopping 80 points, leaving Shirley’s and CBC to fight for the other berth.

SBC won 20 of the 10 points offered when it played against CBC last week and then blanked Taga Badminton Club, 15-0, in the first day of their match up on Dec. 7. SBC is aiming to win a fourth straight crown.

Shirley’s currently has 62 points to enjoy a four-point edge over CBC’s 58. CBC moved closer to Shirley’s after posting a 12-3 score last Sunday.

Shirley’s and CBC vie for second finals berth when they play matches in the mixed A, women’s AB, C and BC, and men’s C events.

Golden Racquets and Taga are contesting a place in the battle for third with the former having 38 points and holding on to a seven-point lead against the latter’s 31.

Three points are awarded to a team that wins a match in two games, while 2 points are given to the winning squad and one to its opponent if the match goes to three. (Jon Perez)
