Shirley’s Coffee Shop recovered quickly, defeating Fiesta Resort & Spa, 42-36, in the lone women’s division game played in the 2014 Tan Holdings Basketball Classic last Tuesday night at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium.

With the victory, Shirley’s, which fell short to IT&E last Saturday, 39-42, improved its record to 3-2 for a tie for second with the Fiesta and the streaking IT&E. Armatech leads the six-team field with its flawless 4-0 mark, while Kanoa Resort (1-3) and the winless Sun Palace Hotel (0-5) complete the division.

Jeraldine Castillo, who faltered in leading Shirley’s to a come-from-behind win over IT&E last weekend despite sizzling for a season-high 22 points, was still on fire in their fifth game, recording 21 points against Fiesta.

The Marianas High School standout scored 12 straight points in the second half, giving Shirley’s more breathing room after the team led by only a hair at the break, 19-18. Castillo’s teammates then stepped up in the latter part of the second half to pull off the 6-point win.

Negahr Rastguiy tallied 4 straight points, while Diane Pablo drilled 5 of the team’s last 7 markers. Jasmine Phan registered the 2 other points of Shirley’s in the homestretch.

While Castillo drew some support from her teammates, it was a different story for Fiesta, which had only two players making it to the board in the second half. Jahnelle Francisco knocked in 12 points, while Friendly Joy Pena chipped in 6.

Lian Reyes had two early triples in the first half and 8 points at the break before going cold in the second half, while Sheryl Cabrera was the fourth scorer for Fiesta, but made only 2 points.

Meanwhile, games in the 2014 Tan Holdings Basketball Classic will continue this weekend.

Tonight, Rollers 3 takes on the Ol’Aces for the first boys U19 game at 5:30pm, while in the second match at 7pm, IT&E duels Fiesta Resort in the women’s pairing. For the last match of the night, the Sonics challenge Kagman Risers at 8pm.

Tomorrow, there will be a triple-header in the women’s division with Fiesta meeting Sun Palace Hotel in the first match at 5:30pm, Armatech facing IT&E in the second tiff at 7pm, and Shirley’s battling Kanoa in the third game at 8pm.

Shirley’s 42–Castillo 21, Pablo 11, Rastguiy 7, Vergara 2, Phan 2.

Fiesta Resort 36–Francisco 15, Pena 11, Reyes 8, Cabrera 2.

Scoring by halves: 19-18, 42-36.
