Tinian-based Sherman Consulting was recently certified as an official HUBZone entity by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The HUBZone program was created for small companies that operate and employ people in Historically Under-utilized Business Zones or HUBZones. As a HUBZone-certified business, Sherman Consulting LLC is eligible to compete for the program’s set-aside U.S. federal contracts and receive a 10% price evaluation preference in full and open contract competitions.

“The HUBZone certification strengthens our capabilities to compete on an adjusted playing field [that] favors businesses that do business in our region,” said Phillip T. Mendiola Long, CEO of Sherman Consulting. “It is our hope that this HUBZone certification brings value to both federal agencies and prime contractors as they can see what ‘local’ companies can accomplish at the same or at a higher level than our U.S. mainland competitors. We’re proud to be certified by the SBA HUBzone program and to be a part of ‘localized’ job creation in this economically challenging part of the Western Pacific region.”

The CNMI currently has only 13 HUBzone-certified firms, with Mendiola-Long’s

Sherman Consulting and his other company, Tinian Fuel Services, Inc., being the only two certified on Tinian.

Sherman Consulting LLC was created to nurture, assist, and manage foreign and U.S.

domestic firms that do business in the Micronesian region.  Operating since 1998, the firm has been responsible for over $150 million in direct investments in the region and manages operations for over 10 different U.S. and foreign firms within the CNMI.  Mendiola-Long, Sherman Consulting’s principal, is considered the region’s expert in the U.S. military buildup and has been involved in military construction consulting for over 15 years.
