Sherlyn Jones improved on her runner-up finish last year by going all the way in this year’s CNMI Women’s Golf Association’s season-ending, two-day CWGA Annual Tournament held last April 15 and 16 at the Laolao Bay Golf & Resort.

The Marianas Health, LLC staff nipped runner-up Hyun “Sunny” Son via scorecard tiebreaker after both monthly winners fired two-day totals of net 138.

Jones came away with a 138 following a net 81 on Day 1 and a net 85 on Day 2 for a gross of 166. Minus her 28 handicap, she posted a best two-day net total.

Son finished with a 138 after shooting identical 84s in both rounds for a gross of 168 for the 30-handicapper.

Last year’s champion, Flor Jones, took third place after shooting a net 139 built around a gross of 175. She scored a gross 88 (net 68) on the first round then followed it up with a gross of 87 (net 67) on the second.

Aside from an entire season’s bragging rights, Sherlyn Jones also won a championship trophy, a spanking new golf bag, and a gift certificate.

Asked what her secret was in winning this year, Jones said it was staying positive, focusing on the game, and just enjoying the beautiful scenery at the Laolao Bay golf course

“My putting was really good and I was able to focus on the greens and with a mindset of making two-putts at the most. Both days were actually hot and windy. The fairways were kind of dry but I just concentrated on what I can control in the course.  Sometimes overthinking creates tension so I just kept myself relaxed and enjoyed the game,” said Jones of what she did to win the two-day CWGA Annual Tournament.

She then dedicated her win to all CWGA members.

“I knew some of them just gave me a chance. I thank you all very much. This will be my last year with them.  I wish you all the best. God bless,” said Jones.

Rose Rohringer and Yuko Togawa completed the Top 5 of the CWGA Annual Tournament with net scores of 148 and 151, respectively. Togawa actually beat Sae Hee Kim via another scorecard tiebreaker.

Others who competed, with their net scores in parenthesis, were Eunae Sophia Jang (153), Dol Yamagishi (157), Euan Ae Clara Chang (161), Mio Kim (166), Terry Guerrero (167), Lorraine Babauta (168), and Nirimai Koebel (171).
