Sherlyn Jones tops CWGA July Ace toruney
Sherlyn Jones bested four other golfers en route to winning the CNMI Women’s Golf Association’s ace golfer for July after the conclusion of the club’s monthly event held last Saturday at the Laolao Bay Golf Resort’s west course.
Jones lit up the field and finished her round 11 strokes ahead of runner-up Mio Kim, while Yuko Togawa rounded out the third spot.
Jones started out her day in first place with an even 40 on the front nine and finished the back side strong with a 38 for a gross count of 78 that was trimmed into a field-low 64 net score after the handicap adjustment. Jones was in the zone and turned in the lowest stroke play round of the day.
As for Kim, she penciled in a 43 on the front and a 44 on the back for a raw total of 87 that worked into a 75 net card.
Togawa hit the turn with a 42 and tried to rally back with a 37 on the back nine for a gross score of 79 that was shaved down to a 76 net total.
Notably, newcomer Jeon Me Ae scratched a 41 on the front nine and held true on the back with a 39 for an even 80 raw card, but her handicap is still being established. Other new members include Ju Mee Park (gross 91) and Boon Soon Yoon (gross 106).
Jones joins June ace Noriko Togawa and May ace Xiao Lin Wang as qualifiers into the season-ending Ace of Aces tournament slated for April of next year. The CWGA season starts and ends annually in April.
Established in March 2007, the CWGA is a nonprofit organization founded to promote, encourage, and introduce women to the sport of golf in the CNMI.
The CWGA utilizes a standard net score format, where a predetermined point system is tallied during the season.
First place is awarded 15 points, 14 for second and so on down through the Top 10 place finishers, and the rest receive a point for participation each month.
