SHEFA official slams deceptive HY statement

Joe Mafnas, vice chairman of the board of directors for the Saipan Higher Education Financial Assistance, had the following comments regarding what he says is a “misleading and deceptive” press release issued by Heinz Hofschneider and Ray Yumul.

“In a press release issued today by Yumul and his running mate Heinz Hofschneider, an allegation was made that, with the passage of Public Law 18-56, SHEFA funding would be in limbo. Nothing could be further from the truth,” Mafnas said.

“The real facts are that Public Law 18-56 prohibits new licenses or additional machines over the present number of machines for poker gaming after April 2015. All poker licenses issued prior to this date will remain in operation indefinitely provided, of course, that poker operators continue to comply with poker operation regulations.”

“What makes this allegation even more dumbfounding to me is the fact that Ray Yumul was present during the discussions on this legislation as a sitting senator. Does Ray not talk to his own running mate?” Mafnas asked.

“The students that benefit from SHEFA deserve so much more than to be lied to by individuals trying to become the leaders of our Commonwealth,” Mafnas stated. “The bottom line is that the existing poker machines will continue to provide funding to SHEFA. End of story! (PR)
