SHEFA distributes total of $847K in financial grants
The Saipan Higher Education Financial Assistance has distributed a total of $847,000 in scholarship awards to students for the fall semester.
SHEFA administrator Merissa S. Rasa said Thursday last week that $520,700 of the total amount was for grant in aid, $165,000 went to priority field of study award, and $161,500 went to the merit incentive award.
Grant in aid is financial assistance given to eligible students, the priority field of study is awarded to students enrolled in a specialty area, while the merit award is given if the student performs really well during the school term.
Rasa disclosed that there were 1,221 applicants for the fall term. About 514 were approved and 707 were denied.
“The reasons for denial is either the application was incomplete, did not meet the duration time, did not maintain the required number of credits, and did not maintain the 2.5 cumulative grade point average or higher,” Rasa said.
She said that SHEFA is still accepting applications for the next spring term.
“All batches for awards were distributed and the new application deadline for new or returning applicants is on Dec. 1, 2014, and the deadline for submitting supporting documents for all applicants is next year, Feb. 28, 2015.”
