Tinian Mayor Ramon M. Dela Cruz has placed Edward Shai, resident department head for the Tinian Department of Finance, on administrative leave, pending results of charges filed against him by the Office of the Public Auditor.

Dela Cruz has appointed Benedicto Decena, currently in charge of Customs Division for the Department of Finance, to be the acting resident department head. Decena has over 20 years of experience at the Tinian Department of Finance and is respected by his fellow employees.

Shai is accused of submitting false travel documents in order to cash per diem checks for his personal use. Shai, 50, was served Friday with an arrest warrant on Tinian on charges of theft by deception and misconduct in public office. (PR/Tribune files)
