SFA to host Saipan fishing tournament next month
The Saipan Fishermen’s Association will hold the 34th Annual Saipan International Fishing Tournament on July 14 and 15.
Last year, more than 60 boats and 200 fishermen and crew competed in the two-day fishing derby, with Debbi I catching the tournament grand prize with its 384.50-lbs marlin.
“The SFA also has been meeting in preparation for the big day, and we’re pleased to announce the tournament dates so that interested participants can start preparing for another great tournament,” SFA president Gene Weaver said.
Game fish categories are (Top 3): Bill Fish, Yellow Fin, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, and Skipjack. Prizes will also be awarded for total weight and grand winner, while SFA will hand over a special prize to the first participant to land a marlin weighing over the record 942 lbs.
The tournament registration cost is $150 per boat, inclusive of a captain and one crew member. Each additional angler is $25. Pre-registration will be held at Smiling Cove Marina on Friday, July 13, from 5pm to 6:30 p.m., where SFA will provide a tournament briefing. The tournament will begin at 6am and end at 6pm each day at designated launching points and times only.
The tournament is supported by the Marianas Visitors Authority.
“Sport fishing is a niche market that the MVA is pleased to continually join the Saipan Fisherman’s Association in promoting it,” said MVA Community Projects manager Martin Duenas. “We always look forward to welcoming our competitors from Guam, and with earlier announcement of this year’s tournament, we hope to attract more fishermen from the region and internationally.”
