Sex offender back in prison again
A year after being in prison for failing to update the Sex Offender Registry about his verification information and other violations, sex offender Ivan Jones Castro is back in prison on the same charges.
Castro, 36, turned himself in to the Superior Court on Friday after the Department of Public Safety said Thursday that he is a wanted person.
The court maintained Friday the $25,000 cash bail it initially set in Castro’s arrest warrant.
Assistant public defender Cindy Nesbit was appointed as counsel for Castro. Assistant attorney general Chester Hinds appeared for the government.
Preliminary hearing will be on July 7 at 9am.
Castro had pleaded guilty to sex abuse of a minor in the second degree in 2003. He was granted parole in November 2005 and registered as a sex offender in 2006.
In May 2016, he was sentenced to six months and 30 days in prison for failing to update his information with the Sex Offender Registry Office, for having contact with minors, and for violating his probation conditions.
Castro was given credit of 161 days of time served. He was released on June 17, 2016, and placed on supervised probation for three years.
Castro was required to abide by all the terms and conditions of the Sex Offender Registry, including notifying DPS of any address changes within two days and not living in a household with any non-biological minors.
On March 14, 2017, a Drug Enforcement Task Force officer served an arrest warrant on Castro for trafficking of methamphetamine or “ice.” The court released Castro to a third party custodian on April 28, 2017.
Police said that Castro did not update the Sex Offender Registry Office about his whereabouts since his release on bail.
The case is currently being handled by Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho.
