Serin Chung is taking her game to the next level after remaining undefeated in Day 2 of the 2022 North Pacific Regional Championships at the Guam National Tennis Center in Dededo.

After beating compatriot Savita Sikkel last Monday, the Saipan International School student won both her matches in the girls 16 and under yesterday in quick fashion.

She opened the day with a 6-0 6-0 blasting of Angelina Blaz and then capped it with a similar 6-1, 6-1 domination of Randiann Atento.

“It is really nice to be back at NPRC after two years of not having this tournament. It’s challenging but I’m having fun playing against players from other places,” Chung told Saipan Tribune through social media.

The Northern Marianas Pacific Mini Games 2022 veteran added that being part of the just concluded quadrennial event also helped with her game.

“It definitely helped. I feel like I am able to deal with being nervous a little better,” she added.

Sikkel, meanwhile, won two of three games yesterday following her opening day loss to Chung. She first edged Randiann Atento, 6-4 3-6 7-5.

After losing to Amelie Terlaje, 2-6, 3-6, Sikkel bounced back with a 6-4 7-5victory over Angelina Blaz.

In the boys 16 and under, Min Soo “David” Kwon absorbed two setbacks before prevailing in his final match.

He first lost to Jonathon Jackson, 6-3, 6-2, and Arjan Sachdej, 6-1, 6-3, before breaking through with a 6-0 6-4 win over fellow CNMI netter Simon Tang.

Nason Wessel also was victorious in his lone match yesterday after beating Aki Matsuno, 6-0 6-4.

Cody Shimizu, meanwhile, lost to former CNMI netter Andy Cajigan, 0-6, 2-6.

In the girls 14 and under, Irin Chung got the better of Desirae Wolphagen, 6-0 6-1, while compatriot Wang Hoo defeated Lulu William, 6-4 6-3.

Wimbledon veteran La Hunn Lam continued with his rampage in Guam with a 6-2 6-3 win over compatriot Si Woo Lee in the boys 14 and under.

Seung Woo “Henry” Choi also took down Hilary Toves, 6-2 6-2, and June Yu tired out Daniel Dontrick, 6-1 5-0 (retired), in the same age group.

In the boys 12 and under, Jihun Park overcame a tough challenge from Camelo Chen to prevail, 5-7, 6-2, 12-10, while Jeong Woo “Ryan” Choi beat Jeren Devera, 6-2, 7-5.

The CNMI pair of  Jeong Woo “Ryan” Choi and Jihun Park lost in their boys 12 and under doubles match against Camelo Chen and Jeren Devera, 3-6, 4-2.

Lina Tsukagoshi, for her part, advanced in the girls 12 and under after beating Rachel San Agustin, 4-6, 6-3, 10-6.

After an absence of two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a total of 19 junior netters from the Northern Marianas are seeing action in the 2022 North Pacific Regional Championships.

They are duking it out against 16 players from Guam, six players from the Federated States of Micronesia, and five players from Palau.

The CNMI team is coached by Northern Marianas Islands Tennis Association president Jeff Race.
