Senator: Expand Tinian enhancements
Urges public to comment on Tinian divert
A Tinian senator is urging the public to comment on the proposed changes to the Tinian divert airfield project that were outlined during a public scoping meeting last month.
Sen. Jude U. Hofschneider (R-Tinian) said in an interview yesterday that the U.S. Air Force held a public scoping meeting on Tinian in mid-May, during which they proposed that a pipeline be installed in order to transport fuel for aircraft from the seaport to the divert facilities; improve roads that would be used during the construction period; and undertake seaport improvements during the construction period.
“…It is a proposal and now that it is out for review, they would be needing comments,” said Hofschneider, adding that the USAF would also be working with the Commonwealth Ports Authority.
“I am very pleased with the progress,” he said, adding that he too would be submitting comments to the USAF on the proposed changes.
When asked about his concerns, he said he wants the USAF to also include road improvements from the seaport all the way through 42nd Avenue and extend it all the way to the Broadway intersection on Tinian to the north, toward the divert airfield project.
Another is to make the proposed fuel pipeline from the seaport to the airport open for civilian use.
“…They are going to install the pipeline for jet fuel, so I am going to request to consider including civilian operations in the event that we have commercial flights in the future to allow us to [benefit] from that as well,” said Hofschneider.
He did not specify when the deadline is for the commenting period.
CPA on Oct. 31, 2017, unanimously approved the USAF layout plan for the Tinian divert airfield project after several years of inactivity by the U.S. military.
