The Senate has adopted a resolution recognizing the umbrella organization of Filipino groups in the CNMI, as Filipinos worldwide mark today the 116th anniversary of the Philippine declaration of independence.

Senate Resolution 18-29, authored by Senate President Ralph Torres (R-Saipan), acknowledges the United Filipino Organizations’ “extraordinary contributions” to the CNMI, including their disaster relief efforts.

“UFO has consistently joined the CNMI government and private sector in various community projects and programs through volunteer work,” senators said.

Now led by its president Annamae Adaza, UFO spearheaded fundraising to help victims of Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in the Philippines last year. UFO donated $14,150 to the Philippine Consulate General in Guam to go toward typhoon relief efforts. The group, with the help of individuals and businesses, also sent relief goods to typhoon-hit areas.

Founded in 1997, UFO aims to unite the many diverse regional, professional, sports, and other Filipino organizations in the CNMI.

Gov. Eloy S. Inos signed on Sunday a CNMI-Philippines friendship proclamation and joined Philippine officials in a flag-raising ceremony at the Coral Ocean Point Resort.

The CNMI and the Philippines share centuries of common Spanish heritage, customs, traditions, and values that have brought their peoples together. The governor acknowledged the Filipinos in the CNMI for all their contributions to the local economy.
