A Saipan-based nonprofit organization that provides services to handle addiction and mental health issues recently held a presentation on drug and alcohol awareness for Da’ok Academy students.
Second Wind founding member Grace Sablan, volunteer staff Lorraine Ada, along with speakers Joey Arriola and John Gonzales, held the presentation at the Koblerville Elementary School cafeteria on May 16, 2023.
The presentation was made interactive with discussions on identifying the seven commonly used and abused drugs on the islands, especially among teens. Students were asked to identify based on their understanding, knowledge, media knowledge, and experience with peers and family of what they experience and observe at home, villages, or neighborhood about drugs and alcohol use.
As part of the presentation, the more than 35 students were divided into seven groups and had icebreaker on identifying certain names associated with drugs known to teens. Students were also given an opportunity to present their findings and shared what was discussed in their particular groups.
The students also heard touching and inspiring messages that were personally shared by Ada (as a founding member) and Arriola (as an advocate) in connection with their respective recovery experiences.
