HONOLULU-The Coast Guard has suspended the search for an 18-year-old mariner who fell overboard approximately 115 miles south of American Samoa.

The Coast Guard’s search area covered 2,890 square miles.

“The decision to suspend was not made easily,” said Lt. Cmdr. Michael Jackson, search and rescue mission control for Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu. “We took into account the amount of time this individual was in the water, probability of survival, weather data, and ultimately made the decision to suspend. We offer our thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of this man during this difficult time.”(USCG)
