Search on for distressed vessel

Authorities on Saipan have been searching since Saturday morning for a distressed vessel in the waters west of the island.

As of press time last night, Saipan Tribune was still waiting for an update from acting Department of Public Safety information officer Lt. Jason Tarkong about the missing vessel, identified as My Lady.

DPS has yet to release information on how many people were on the vessel.

DPS said that on Saturday at about 10:40am, it received a call from the U.S. Coast Guard reporting a distress call from a vessel identified as My Lady over the VHF marine radio channel 16.

DPS Boating Safety Section then launched its search-and- rescue boat called Impact to conduct the grid search patterns 20 miles west of Saipan.

The USCG also launched a rescue vessel and helicopter to assist with the search.

DPS said that visibility was poor and water conditions were rough on Saturday due to high winds and rough water. There was no sight of the distressed vessel. The search was called off late Saturday afternoon. DPS BSS vessels made their way back to Saipan.

A small craft advisory has been in effect since Thursday.
