Saipan Community School hosted its annual science fair last Feb. 22, a culmination of all the students’ hard work.

Classes from Kindergarten to 3rd grade completed class projects together. The Kindergarteners researched “Germs, Germs, GERMS,” the 1st Grade completed “The Bubble Experiment,” the 2nd Grade studied Buoyancy and experimented with “Boat Designs,” and the 3rd grade researched “The Life Cycle of the King Crow Butterfly” and asked the question: Where Did All the Monarch Butterflies Go?

A total of 75 individual projects from 4th through 8th grade were also displayed at the fair. Projects from each grade level were rated by groups of judges before the second round of judging. Students were rated on their scientific thought and thinking process, creative ability, understanding and creative problem-solving skills, clarity and organization, as well as visuals and presentation. The second round of judging aimed to highlight the best projects out of the top projects from the previous round.

The fair culminated with an award ceremony that evening. Parents, students, and staff members were invited to view the projects on display and recognize the students’ accomplishments and hard work.

Jihyo Kim in 4th grade was awarded overall Elementary Winner, and Jacky Zhen in 6th grade was awarded Overall Jr. High Winner.

While 27 students advanced to the second round of judging, only 15 were awarded Top 3 in their class, and only five will be able to represent SCS in the islandwide STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Fair.

SCS would like to thank the parents and guardians for all their help and support throughout this project, and to our volunteers who served as judges. We greatly appreciate the judges that came from our local science community including BECQ, DFW, NOAA, MINA, Joeten Kiyu Library, and NMC-ENRO.
