The battle for the men’s open singles championship will be between the Top 2 seeded players, as Robbie Schorr and Jimin Woo prevailed in their respective semis matches in the 2019 White Coconut Tennis Classic.
The top-ranked Schorr, who lost to Moris Villanueva in last year’s title game, earned a return trip to the finals following a 6-3, 6-3 victory over No. 3 Jeff Race yesterday at the American Memorial Park tennis court. Earlier last Saturday, Schorr booked the last semis ticket in the division after easing past Malika Miyawaki, 6-1, 6-0. Also last Saturday, Woo advanced to the finals ahead of Schorr after downing Sean Lee in their Final Four duel, 6-2, 6-4.
Schorr and Woo will dispute the men’s single crown today at 9:30am, while Lee had already secured third place after winning over Race (walkover). Also scheduled for today is the consolation match between Vincent Tudela and Miyawaki, who won over Tania Tan, 6-0, 6-0, and Gary Ramsey, 6-1, 6-0, respectively.
Meanwhile, the boys U16 singles title will be contested, too by the Top 2 players in the division.
No. 1 seed Sam Ryu advanced to the finals after eliminating Andy Kim, 6-4, 6-3. Ryu will square off against No. 2 Daniel Kang, who also needed only two sets to down Maria Gregoire in their semis match, 6-1, 6-1. Gregoire will play Kim for the third place finish today.
In the boys U10 singles, No. 1 June Yu moved to the finals following a 6-4 victory over Jun Lim. Her finals foe will be the unranked Lina Tsukagoshi, who downed Yutaka Kadokura in the other semis pairing, 6-2. Lim and Kadokura met yesterday for the battle for third with the former winning, 6-3, while Riku Takahashi prevailed in the other consolation game last Saturday after topping Ki Won Lee, 6-4.
In the boys U12 singles, Yu also made it to the finals after outclassing Takeru Jim in their semis match last Saturday, 6-4, 6-4. Yu will challenge the No.1 seed Juncheol Hwang for the division title today, as the latter eased his way past Wataru Kadokura, 6-0, 6-0, in the other Final Four match last weekend. Kadokura and Jim will also collide today to dispute the third place honors.
In the girls U12 singles, upsets marked the semifinal round with the unranked Hoo Wang stunning No.1 Savita Sikkel, 6-3, 6-2, and Dain Lee pulling the rug under No. 2 Irin Chung, 6-3, 6-4. Chung settled for the third place award following a hard-fought win over Sikkel, 4-6, 6-0, 10-8.
