All Schools take center stage
Last week was a busy one for CNMI students, as they participated in the 2014 McDonald’s/PSS All Schools Athletics Championships.
The All Schools tournament dominated last week’s headlines with the staging of its running, throwing, and jumping events in various age groups. Koblerville Elementary School emerged as the big winner in the elementary division, winning four categories, while Hopwood Junior High School swept the U14 age group and Marianas High School and Saipan Southern High School split the U18 top honors.
Other notable victories last week were recorded by the Falcons, Braves, and Paire U12.
The Falcons and Braves advanced in the Major division finals of the 2013 Saipan Little League Baseball after defeating separate playoff foes. The defending champions Falcons were first paired against Laolao Bay and won the quarterfinals match, 6-1, to march into the semis against the Comets. The Falcons then earned a return trip to the finals after ousting the Comets, 6-2.
In the other semis pairing, the NSA Braves avoided the upset axe of McDonald after posting a 9-7 win. Earlier, the Braves gained a semis berth after downing the Little Legals, 4-3, while McDonald’s stunned the third-ranked IT&E in the quarterfinals, 5-4.
In the 2014 FA Boys and Girls Challenge Cup at the San Antonio Elementary School Field, Paire U12 outlasted MP United U12 in a shootout, 3-2, to clinch the championships. The finals went to a shootout after the games remained tied, 1-1, despite the 15-minute extension period. Marty Pangelinan canned the winning goal in the shootout to dethrone two-time champion MP United. Paire won its first FA Cup in the division after losing on its first bid three years ago, incidentally against the same club.
Meanwhile, three competitions kicked off last week with DLX/IT&E and DL Corp. starting its basketball leagues at the Gualo Rai Basketball Court and Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium and Northern Marianas Badminton Association holding the 2014 IT&E Mixed Doubles and Singles Badminton Tournament at the TSL Sports Complex.
Other ongoing contests on Saipan continued last week with the Brewers leading the Yankees, 2-1, (pending last Friday’s Game 4 results) in a best-of-five title series in the 2014 Saipan Baseball League at the Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios Ballfield and the QQ caging having its regular season games at the Garapan Basketball Court.
