School sports in spotlight

Students reigned in schools competitions last week.
In the 2011-2012 Coalition of Private School Sports Association Volleyball League, four teams made it to the playoff round of the junior varsity division with Grace Christian Academy eventually winning the JV championship.
The Eagles advanced to the finals after beating Saipan International School in the semis in three sets. In the other semis pairing, Whispering Palms downed Marianas Baptist Academy. In the one-game finals, GCA swept Whispering Palms to reclaim the championship it last won during the 2009-2010 season against Mt. Carmel School.
In the 2011-2012 Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization Girls Basketball League at the MHS Gymnasium, the MHS Lady Dolphins remained undefeated in the varsity division and hold the lead with their 5-0 record.
Saipan Southern High School is in third place with a 3-2 slate, followed by Kagman High School and SIS, which own similar 1-3 slates.
In the junior varsity, Southern has a 3-1 record for the top spot, while MHS and Kagman hold 2-1 and 0-3 marks, respectively.
In the 2011-2012 Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization Boys Volleyball League, GCA is unbeaten in 11 games and a win away from sweeping the regular season. SIS is in second place with a 10-2 card, while Kagman and MHS QT’s are tied for third with identical 6-5 slates.
Over at the Hopwood Junior High School Field, the 2012 NMIFA Interscholastic U12 League kicked off with William S. Reyes Elementary School beating Kagman Elementary School both in the boys and girls division games. Oleai also prevailed over Koblerville in the boys division, while the girls match resulted in a 2-2 draw.
Also opening last week was the GBL IT&E Cup with Konflikt and the Runnin’ Rebels winning their debuts.
Other on-going competitions on Saipan continued with NMIFA holding the regular season games in the youth and men’s fall leagues and Shirley’s caging having its elimination-round matches.
