Saipan Cares for Animals is having a carwash fundraiser this Sunday, Dec. 18, from 9am to 4pm at the Shell gas station in Puerto Rico.

It is $10 per car and the funds raised will support the SCA’s “Virtual Shelter” needs.

According to SCA director Elizabeth Pliscou, “every dog and cat in the Virtual Shelter program receives all necessary medication, vaccines, and spay or neuter surgery at no cost to its foster family or new adopting owner. Like any shelter, it is expensive to maintain and our low-cost community pet clinic cannot support it.”

Since April of this year, the shelter has housed over 140 cats and dogs, “with thanks to the dozens of community volunteers who participate with SCA’s virtual shelter program.”

“We are very excited about this new virtual shelter program, and we plan to continue and expand this program. But particularly as we are just starting with this, it is taking a lot of time and resources to get this fully implemented. And because we have limited staff, and limited funding, running the virtual shelter program is cutting into our essential clinic and animal care services to the point of permanently closing,” Pliscou said.

SCA is encouraging people to come out this Sunday to get their cars cleaned and help support the cause.

Pliscou hit upon the Virtual Shelter idea earlier this year after the many hindrances that SCA has faced. Instead of SCA sheltering and taking in stray dogs and cats, community members are doing the sheltering, while SCA focuses on offering free vaccines, the anti-worm medication Bravecto, tick and worm medication, and spay and neuter surgery for its rescues.

The SCA clinic is open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 6pm. Sundays are for emergencies only. Contact the clinic at (670) 488-2751 for the latest information on their animal medication and for emergencies at (670) 285-5448.
