SBL eyes weekend games for Masters, U25 divisions
Saipan Baseball League director Tony Rogolifoi is calling all coaches of competing teams in the Under-25 and Masters divisions to attend tomorrow’s meeting at 9am at the conference room of the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Rogolifoi said the meeting would chiefly discuss the schedule of the games in the ongoing league after they had already encountered problems due to the island’s unpredictable weather. He said they needed to have additional games in both divisions every Saturday with the youth taking the field at 10am and the veterans playing at 6:30.
“We have no choice but to squeeze in extra games every Saturday in order for us to finish the season before the year ends,” said Rogolifoi.
The U25 league had already canceled four matches because of afternoon rains, while two games were discontinued also for the same reasons.
Rained-out matches were on Aug. 29, Blue Jays against Pirates (first round); Sept. 14, Pirates versus Tanapag Falcons; Sept. 21, GSM Cubs against Pirates; and today Sept. 28, Pirates against Blue Jays (second round).
The Aug. 31 first round meeting between the Cubs and the Falcons was discontinued due to rain with the Tanapag-based team leading 4-0 after two complete innings. Rain again halted their second round match last Tuesday, Sept. 26, and this time the Cubs were holding on to 3-0 lead when play was stopped in the fourth.
The Masters league, meanwhile, had six rained out games—Aug. 28 and 30, and Sept. 8, 13, 22, and, 25 while one was rescheduled with no available umpire to officiate the match on Sept. 15.
According to the U25’s original schedule, the finals would start on Dec. 14, while the title match for the masters is set early December.
