SBC routs TAGA in Traders Insurance tourney

Saipan Badminton Club convincingly won its first assignment in the 5th Annual Traders Insurance Badminton Team Tournament after dominating TAGA, 25-8.
SBC swept its first three games in Week 1 of the competition and then topped six of the last eight games over the weekend at the TSL Sports Complex for the impressive victory.
Oh Imbog and Pastor Kok Hiong Pang (men’s doubles B), Joel Ortega and Oh An Yeol (men’s doubles C), and Kim Boranah and Lee Yun Yee (women’s doubles C) gave SBC its first three triumphs in Week 1 and were joined on the winners circle by the pairs of Hannah Choi and Toshiko Obata, Heo In Souk and Sunja Kim, Gary Bandoja and Kim, Oh Imbog and Obata, and Boranah and Ortega.
Hannah and Obata swept TAGA’s Loyda Ito and Chris Obaldo in the women’s doubles A, 21-16, 21-15, while Souk and Sunja Kim also needed only to games to down Shirley Kim and Gigi Zapanta in the women’s doubles B, 21-19, 21-17.
Sunja got her second easy win when she teamed up with Bandoja in beating Luis Camacho and Loyda Ito in the mixed doubles A, 21-13, 21-14. In the mixed doubles B, Imbog and Obata cruised past Jerry Tan and Merlie Tolentino, 21-14, 21-16, and SBC completed a sweep in the mixed doubles after Ortega and Boranah topped Elna Curate and Mickey, 21-13, 21-10.
In the singles division, SBC and TAGA split the two matches with Choi beating Angie Ito, 21-11, 21-12 in the women’s division and Andrew Galvez winning the men’s division against Dick Guintu, 21-17, 21-17. TAGA’s second victory came in the men’s doubles A with Galvez joining forces with Rodwealth Espana in edging Guintu and Bandoja, 21-12, 22-20.
With its 25 games won in Week 1 and 20 more in Week 2, SBC now sits in second place in the five-club field, just four games behind frontrunner Golden Racquet (49). TAGA is in third place despite a big loss to SBC, as the former has earned 40 games won, while the Berks Blazers (33) and Shirley’s Badminton Club (31) are in fourth and fifth places, respectively. Results of other pairings in Week 2 will be published later this week.
The five competing clubs will compete in a round-robin elimination with only the Top 4 squads advancing to the crossover semifinals.
