SBC signified its intention of keeping the crown as it amassed 31 points after the first three days of play in the 8th edition of the annual tournament.
SBC scored a tough 17-13 decision over Shirley’s last Friday and Saturday then followed it up with a 14-1 romp of Golden Racquets last Sunday.
The three-time titlist, aiming for a fourth straight crown, had a slow start and even allowed Shirley’s to take an 8-7 lead after the first day. SBC then got its game going in Day 2 as it scored a 10-5 victory over Shirley’s. It had an easier time against Golden Racquets last Sunday as it either won by default or only by two sets.
SBC had a bye in the five-team tournament this Thanksgiving weekend and will next face the Community Badminton Club, composed mostly of youth players, on Dec. 5 and 6.
Meanwhile, Taga Badminton is currently in second place with 20 points after tallying a 15-15 score against Golden Racquets in the first day.
Taga also played CBC in the opening week and is behind, 5-10, entering the final five matches—mixed A, women’s A-B, men’s c, and women’s C and B-C—set this Friday.
Golden Racquets is in third place with 16 points, followed by Shirley’s (13) and CBC (10).
Three points is awarded if a team won a match in two sets, while two points is given to the winning squad and one to its opponent if the match goes three sets.
CBC will next take on Golden Racquets, while Shirley’s battles Taga on Nov. 29 and 30, respectively, after Friday’s match-ups between CBC and Taga, and SBC and Golden Racquets.
The tournament ends with the finals on Dec. 13 and 14. (Jon Perez)
