Santos wants private landowners compensated on Route 100 project
Rep. Teresita A. Santos (R-Rota) is asking the Department of Public Works and the Department on Public Lands whether private landowners have been compensated after the government used their lands for the Route 100 road project on Rota.
In a letter to DPW Secretary Martin Sablan and DPL Secretary Pedro A. Tenorio, Santos requested the two Cabinet members to provide her the current status of land compensation claims regarding the road project.
“Although I applaud and commend the actions that have transpired thus far concerning Rota’s Route 100 road project, this is written to respectfully request your offices for an update and most importantly the current status of all private land owners whose property were taken to ensure this project reaches fruition. I am referring to those private land owners who have specifically requested for compensation through land exchanges.”
Santos requested Sablan and Tenorio to expeditiously facilitate and consummate all land exchanges for the private landowners who, she said, “have patiently and unwearyingly waited to be justly compensated.”
She added that land is critical and holds the potential to stimulate sustained economic growth and long-term social welfare.
“So the longer we take to compensate these individuals, the longer they will suffer. In addition, the cost of living on Rota is exorbitant coupled with the lack of sea and air transportation that only adds additional burden on our families that have long struggled to make ends meet.
Route 100 is the main highway on the island and the project was intended to repair damage caused by natural disasters such as tropical storms.
