Sen. Teresita A. Santos (Ind-Rota) is pushing for construction of an athletic field and running field on Rota, as was recently recommended to the Rota Legislative Delegation for consideration.

Santos, who is the Rota Legislative Delegation chair, said the project will be time-consuming and costly but will give Rota students and people a safe and dedicated place to train and exercise, and help encourage a healthier and active lifestyle.

The senator disclosed she has already tasked the Legislature’s fiscal analyst to identify a funding source for this project.

In her letter last week to Rota Mayor Efraim M. Atalig and Board of Education vice chair Herman M. Atalig, Santos said two potential sites have been identified and will require further assessment. The first is in the Sinapalo Elementary School campus and the second is directly adjacent to the baseball field in Sinapalo.

“I would like to collaborate our efforts and resources to see this project reach fruition to provide the same resources, albeit on a smaller scale, that our brothers and sisters on the islands of Tinian and Saipan enjoy,” Santos told the Ataligs.

Tinian’s running track is located at the Tinian Jr./Sr. High School campus, while on Saipan it is adjacent to the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium and the baseball/softball fields.

Santos underscored the need to have a collaborative front from all major stakeholders if they want to achieve this goal. “More and more of our people are living healthier lifestyles and are becoming more passionate about running and walking,” she said.
