San Roque slips past Banahaw

  San Roque eked out another come-from-behind win in the 2012 DLX/DL JOS Inter-Color Basketball League, edging Banahaw Restaurant, 83-80, in their rain-delayed match last Wednesday night at the Gualo Rai Basketball Court.

San Roque, which broke into the win column after recovering from a 3-18 deficit en route to beating Wushin Express last week, this time overhauled Banahaw’s 20-point lead, 38-58, to notch its second straight win after a 0-2 start.

Banahaw absorbed its first loss in three games, as it played with only five players, starting in the closing minute of the third period with Joel Saplan fouling out. With one man down and no other bench players to call on, Banahaw ran out of offensive options, especially in the fourth canto when Juluis Tabamo was hounded by Art Salazar. Tabamo was held to a point in the final period were San Roque outgunned Banahaw, 31-15.

Despite its lack of manpower, Banahaw tried to hang on for dear life in the closing seconds with Stanley Tuwon connecting on a drive and drawing a foul from McClain Achas. Tuwon’s basket moved Banahaw within 1, 80-81, with 23 seconds left, but he missed the game-tying bonus shot.

San Roque went on to keep the lead and stole the victory after converting two free throws, while Banahaw completed the monumental collapse as it committed three costly turnovers in its inbound plays.

Angelo Fernando paced San Roque with 33 points, the same output Tabamo contributed in Banahaw’s losing cause. The Banahaw gunner waxed hot early, making 26 points at the break for a 51-36 lead for his team.

Then in the second half, which began late due to rain, Banahaw kicked off the third with a short 7-2 run for its biggest lead, 56-36. However, fatigue and foul trouble started to take their toll on Banahaw, allowing San Roque to slice the lead to 10, 57-67.

San Roque continued its uphill climb and finally stole the lead, 77-75, off Fernando’s steal and fastbreak layup, 1:14 left on the clock.

Joel Javier then made a split to move Banahaw within one and after Salazar muffed a reverse layup, the former nailed a layup to put his team back in the lead, 78-77, 35 seconds left in the game.

San Roque sued for time and when the game resumed, Michael Achas attacked the basket and missed the drive. Fortunately, McClain Achas was there for the putback. Banahaw then went for the quick inbound, but McClain intercepted the pass and kicked the ball to Fernando, who was then fouled and split his charity. Two more inbound play errors from Banahaw returned possession to San Roque, which was fouled on two occasions and earned two more charities to seal the win.

Team Pogi 78, Mawati

In the opening game, Team Pogi outclassed Mawati.

Team Pogi improved to a 4-1 record and jumped to first place, ahead of DLX/Irish Spring (3-1) and Mawati, which dropped to a 2-1 card.

Jason Bahillo and Tim Sula teamed up in Team Pogi’s fourth win, firing 23 and 20 points, while Brian Chan and Jeff Bahillo also had double figures, adding 11 and 10, respectively.

Jerome Reyes led Mawati with his 21 markers.
