San Antonio, Pelicans pummel foes

San Antonio earned its second straight win after hammering Docomo Pacific, 103-74, in the second match in the 2014 DL Corp. Invitational Basketball League after last Sunday night at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium of the TSL Sports Complex.

San Antonio had too much firepower and fresher legs against Docomo to remain undefeated in two games and win its early rematch against the latter. Docomo downed San Antonio in last year’s finals, 72-69.

In their first meeting since last December’s title clash, San Antonio came out smoking, consistently scoring 20-plus in three quarters and exploding for 30 in the third. San Antonio had an even distribution of points in all periods, making it hard for Docomo’s defense to determine which player to contain.

Four players finished in double figures for San Antonio, while five others nailed at least six markers each. Bryle Alegre and Emerson Feria top-scored for San Antonio with 15 points apiece, Kobe Mendoza added 12, and Erick Dela Rosa contributed 10. Five more San Antonio players combined for 37 points.

As for Docomo’s side, only three players played solid offense with James Villacrusis bagging 18 points and big men Juan Camacho and Bruce Berline chipping in 17 and 14, respectively. Docomo fell behind after the first period, 17-24, and was down by 15 at the break, 32-32. San Antonio’s 30-point output in the third broke the game wide open, 77-50.

In the second game, the Pelicans turned on the heat in the fourth quarter to route Olivos Team.

The Pelicans were ahead by only 5 at the end of the third period, 56-51, when their younger and faster crew went on a run-and-gun mode to wallop the veteran crew of Olivos Team.

Jason Lampkin led the fourth-quarter assault, scoring 10 of his 19 points in the payoff canto, while Wens Namelo and Jessie Santos combined for 17, outscoring the entire Olivos Team, which had only 13 markers in the pivotal fourth.

With the win, the Pelicans bounced back from their debut loss to San Antonio, while Olivos Team dropped to a 0-2 record.

Meanwhile, TBK downed Saplan Boyz in last Thursday’s first game, 92-80, while Shocker National pounded Maplas, 86-59.
