Samuel took the solo lead in the 5th Genesis Cup Christian Churches Inter-Color Basketball League, while Ezekiel bagged its second win last Sunday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Samuel outclassed Isaiah, 76-67, in the curtain-raiser to improve to a 3-0 record and clinch first place in the eight-team field and ahead of idle Jeremiah (2-0). Isaiah is at the bottom of the team standings with its 0-3, sharing the cellar with Daniel, which was beaten by Ezekiel in the second game, 62-58. Ezekiel is in third place with its 2-1 slate, while Joshua (1-1), Gideon (1-1), and Caleb (1-1) complete the field.

Mark Cando and Jerome Reyes teamed up in leading Samuel to its third win in as many games as the former scored a game-high 28 points and the latter added 21. Cando had an explosive start, drilling 19 markers in the first half, which ended with Samuel ahead, 43-37. Reyes also finished in double figures in the opening 20 minutes of play, recording 11.

Reyes continued his consistent scoring in the second half, making three fields goals and four free throws, while Cando still contributed 9 points en route to their 9-point victory.

Oliver Gragasin led Isaiah’s losing cause with his 19 points, but was held to 3 markers in the second half. Only Nathan Huddleston nailed more than two field goals for Isaiah in the second half, allowing Samuel to keep its lead.

In the second game, Dan Toribio top-scored for Ezekiel, tallying 20 points. He had 8 in the second half and drew a lot of help from his teammates to help their team recover from a 7-point deficit in the early goings of the final frame. Four other Ezekiel players contributed at least 7 points each.

Rodel Morales had 14 markers to pace the winless Daniel.
