Images of the medals that will be awarded at Samoa 2019 XVI Pacific Games have been released.

Just over 2,300 medals will be awarded in the 27 sports, with the first set of medals to be given in the open water swimming competition set for July 8.

There will be 323 individual medal ceremonies, with hand-carved wooden trays to be used for the presentation. The medal design used parts of the same work that can be seen on Apia’s Clock Tower, street banners throughout Upolu, and at the airport arrivals hall and Savai’i ferries.

“The Samoa 2019 medals incorporate traditional Samoan designs that are used throughout our Games imagery and branding. Medalists from around the Pacific will be departing our country with a token of our culture that we hope they are proud of,” Branding and Communications director Klaus Stunzner said.

“Good luck to all the athletes as they prepare for the opening ceremony. A commemorative medal was also released. It will be given to all athletes, technical and team officials, and volunteers,” he added.

Sponsorship target reached
The Pacific Games Office has reached the sponsorship target of $9 million tala set by the Samoa government for the Pacific Games.

In total, 21 sponsors have come on board in just over five month with Digicel the first to sign up in December last year.

Sponsors have contributed both funds and in-kind sponsorship of services that have helped the Games come together. This involves everything from printing accreditation passes for thousands of athletes, officials, staff and volunteers, to transporting people and equipment to Savai’i for the boxing event.
