Sammen and Munchkins came out victorious in the Saipan International School Senior Class Beach Volleyball Tournament held Saturday at the Fiesta Resort & Saipan Saipan court.

Sammen’s Eunbi Choi, Mauryzon Tybaco, Malika Miyawaki, Andrew Kim, Nilo Calimag, and Steven Hong took three wins to prevail in the U18 division of the competition, which aimed to raise funds for the educational and cultural trip of the Geckos’ senior class.

The division champion outclassed Sandy Andy’s Mac Guintu, Andy Kim, Julianne Hall, Chris Kim, and Sam Ryu in an extended title match. Sammen drew first blood with a 21-12 victory in the opening set, but missed wrapping up the finals early when Sandy Andy recovered in the second, 21-12. Then in the deciding third set, the opposing teams went back and forth before Sammen eked out a 16-14 win.

Before engaging Sandy Andy in a tightly contested championship game, Sammen first defeated Balbbalgan to make it to the semis of the single-elimination tournament. In the Final Four, Sammen downed Suwhoop.

Sandy Andy, on the other hand, was first pitted against Black Pink and prevailed to reach the semis where the former also won against Oppa to move one victory away from notching the division title.

For the U13 division, the Munchkins’ Helen Kim, Danny Lee, Daniel Lam, and Seo Hee Kim earned two wins to top the age group competition.

The Munchkins squared off against the Ace in the finals and needed only two sets to win the match, 21-15, 21-18. Hannah Lim, Kyla Par, Allen Cho, Rigel Devey, and Jayden Lim played for the Ace.

Munchkins made it to the finals following a victory over Hot Chickens & Soda, while the Ace eliminated Bumpin’ Uglies in the other semis pairing. Hot Chickens & Soda, before bowing to the Munchkins, ousted the Phoenixes.

Meanwhile, tournament organizers and SIS seniors Sally Lai and Miyawaki would like to thank the Northern Mariana Islands Volleyball Association, the Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan and its manager Wendi Herring, and all the participating teams for supporting the fundraiser.
