Jack Stewart and Mamiko Berger remain the runners to beat after they ruled the inaugural Northern Marianas Sports Foundation 10-kilometer Fun Run last Saturday .

More than 70 runners competed in the race that started and ended at Micro Beach with 35 joining the men’s open and 15 in women’s divisions.

Stewart, who topped the 22nd Annual Tom Picarro Memorial Fun Run on June 13 and finished second to Keith Longuski in the June 8 Run For Nepal, submitted the fastest overall time of 40:34 to clinch the men’s open title.

Stewart enjoyed an almost four-minute lead over youth runner Seiya Eda, who will be representing the CNMI in next week’s Summer Universiade set from July 3 to July 14 in Gwangju, South Korea.

Eda, who also competed in the open men’s division, came in after 44:03, while Charlie Sendin was 44 seconds behind at 44:47. The two runners were also the third and fourth overall finishers.

Berger, who placed second overall behind Stewart, was the top female runner as she finished the 10K course in 43:30.

Claire Devey was more than four minutes behind at second place with a time of 47:57, while Sakiko Eda, Seiya’s mother, came in third at 50:46.

Erico Castro led the Under 17 age group winners after submitting a time of 50:40, followed by Joshua Abragan’s 53:30, and the 1:09:14 of Sam Ryu.

The race, which had a theme “Healthy Community Leads to a Healthy Economy,” is NMSF’s fundraising event with proceeds going to NMSA to support CNMI athletes and improve all sports facilities.
